Модальне дієслово may/might найчастіше перекладається як «могти», «мати дозвіл». May вживається у теперішньому часі, might вживається у минулому часі (але є винятки).
May вживається, щоби висловити:
1. Дозвіл або заборону.
You may eat only one apple at a time.
2. Побажання.
May all your wishes come true.
3. Впевненість (із прислівником well).
He may well take a taxi not to wait for a bus.
Might вживається, щоби висловити:
1. Ввічливу пораду.
You might like to try one of our wonderful desserts.
2. Малоймовірність ситуації.
I might finish my essay if you didn’t ask me silly questions.
3. Типовість ситуації в минулому.
Years ago you might see just a couple of cars in the street.
Щоб побудувати речення, слід вживати наступну конструкцію:
subject \(+\) may/might \(+\) Verb in the \(1\)st form (without 'to') \(+\) other parts of the sentence.
